Percentage of Hole Distance Covered by Tee Shot
Today’s golf stat highlight is ‘Percentage of hole distance covered by tee shot’. It is defined as :”For par 4’s and par 5’s the percentage of the hole distances that are covered by the tee shot. This is calculated by taking the total distance of all the tee shots, and then dividing by the total distance of the holes. “
It can also be divided and filtered to only include par 4s and par 5s by themselves, as you can see in the above picture.
Percentage of distance covered by the tee shot is a useful statistic especially when put into a relevant context in with a small sample size. If you have a college team or a group of players that are playing the same course in the same conditions, you can use this stat to see who played the course the most aggressively off the tee. It is especially interesting if the longest hitter (who has the most potential to gain strokes off the tee) is not leading this category. What caused this longest hitter to play so defensively? Was it strategy or what exactly happened? By measuring this particular statistic, you can identify and find interesting metrics about your golf game. When used in the player-coach conversation it becomes even more powerful, as you are using objective performance data, put into a relevant context, to identify key areas of improvement.
